Aboriginal Dexterity
36”h X 80”w
Oil on Canvas
2003
For the most part, I started this painting on one side of the canvas and worked my way toward the other, using mainly wet on wet techniques, without much layering. As in some of my paintings during this period, I intended to convey a sense of rawness in the application and presentation. In the title, I used “Aboriginal…” partly due to the appearance of the face in the bottom left corner, which reminds me of a Native American, and partly due to the elements of tribal art scattered throughout the rest of the piece. I used “…Dexterity” due to the skill of craftsmanship I used as a painter, namely the different genres used to paint that all converge near the Skinless man’s atom’s apple…which becomes a beautiful lady, gently sitting amidst all the jousting and juxtaposing of elements in this work.
