This painting is about our fight for life. I call it Maternal Earth, vice Mother Earth, in that earth is in a constant state of pregnancy, about to give birth to another unexpected dilemma that will attempt to consume earth’s livelihood. I believe women are the protectors and providers of our earth. I say this not because it’s true, but because I’ve witnessed it, and experienced it all my life…from my mother, aunt, and grandma, to my five sisters, wife, and two daughters. Men are tough, so it may seem, but woman react and respond where no man could. The flying darker images represent the evils of life attacking all that is good; the woman, nature, and such defending what is rightfully theirs. I use no God metaphors in this painting, not that I don’t believe, but sometimes it feels that we as humans are on our own. Stylistically, this was a lesson from Hieronymus Bosch.
