Spatial Enlightenment - My Daughter Seattle’s Silhouette
36”h X 80”w
Oil on Canvas
2002
One of three in a series inspired by my children. Titled, Spatial Enlightenment; My Daughter Seattle’s Silhouette, for a few reasons. Firstly, because of the constant play on space and dimension; secondly, because I had my daughter Seattle in mind while painting this work, including her actual silhouette in the painting. This was my first all-out multiple layered, fields-of-color and subject matter painting, which continually evolved as the painting progressed. It was about being able to flood the canvas with tons of objectivity, and yet, assure the viewer that it is completely balanced, each object in perfect harmony with the next. This was also about a struggle for attention; that is, the gold triangle and teal colored object in the center of the painting do a great job of attracting the viewers attention, yet the hand from Seattle’s silhouette blocks this focal point, encouraging the viewer to look upon her.
