The Birth of the Bag (full picture)

The Birth of the Bag
36”h X 80”w
Oil on Canvas
2005

This painting is about Birth and the life of. The figure on the right represents motherhood--my mother, and my wife at the same time…strange, but bare with me (Freud could explain this a lot better than I). My wife is everything to me, even a mother, watching me as a child as I play with paint on canvas. The figure on the left is me, “The Bag”, which is in a state of transformation, the life of…literally maturing before your eyes. The blue balls of steel represent, well, a few different things, but mainly it’s a representation of an operation I had (yes the “V” word). The bag represents a quasi Dr. Suess character, jointly developed by a coworker and myself. When wearing the bag on one’s head, an altered personification comes forth, much like that of being in costume…In this manner, one can paint unrestrained, especially if they have a maul stick in their hand. The flaccid paint brushes represent expended energies.
