Brims - Mediterranean Influences
36”h X 80”w
Oil on Canvas
2001
I realized this painting during a 6 month Mediterranean deployment while I was stationed onboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) as the Communication’s Officer. During this “Med Cruise” I visited such places as Benidorm, Ephesus, Haifa, Luxor, and Rome; Croatia, Cyprus, Gibraltar, and Malta. This painting represents moments that influenced me as I port hopped the Med. The Right side is Rome—a Caesar in full battle array; the left side is Egypt—a Pharaoh looking through the curtain rod as if it were a kaleidoscope. The right curtain represents Marc Anthony; the left Cleopatra. The figure in the middle and the blue hand on the right are a “type” of self portrait. The figure is reading unknown literature of unknown territories, pondering; the blue hand is reaping and gleaning the fruits of exploration.
